The University of Zimbabwe (UZ), founded in 1952 as University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, gained its full independence in 1980 coinciding with Zimbabwe's independence. It is Zimbabwe's oldest, largest and most prestigious public university, with ~17,000 students across 9 faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Commerce, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Social Studies. UZ is accredited by the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the Association of African Universities (AAU). Its research strengths include tobacco agriculture, mining engineering (gold, platinum, chrome), public health, African literature and social sciences. UZ's medical school is affiliated with Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals — Zimbabwe's largest referral hospital. Notable alumni include Nobel Peace Prize laureate Roy Bennett and several African heads of state.
