The University of Zambia (UNZA), founded in 1965 — one year after Zambian independence — is the country's premier public university and one of Sub-Saharan Africa's most respected academic institutions. Located on a 700-acre campus in Lusaka, UNZA enrols ~23,000 students across 8 schools: Agricultural Sciences, Education, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Medicine, Mines, and Natural Sciences. UNZA is a founding member of the Association of African Universities (AAU), a member of the Commonwealth Association of Universities, and accredited by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA). Its research strengths include tropical medicine, copper mining engineering, agricultural sciences for Southern Africa, and public health. UNZA has produced 5 Zambian presidents and the majority of the country's leading politicians, doctors and engineers.
